Personal Introduction

I am the founding attorney at Young Law Group, a boutique personal injury and medical malpractice litigation firm in Santa Rosa, California. We have a growing book of civil rights cases as well. I am licensed in California and admitted before the U.S. Dist. Court for the Northern District of California and the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Since 1997, I have represented plaintiffs involved in serious personal injury cases. I have a strong background in litigation, trials, and appeals. In 2005, I successfully argued a significant premises liability case on behalf of a seriously injured plaintiff before the California Supreme Court, Delgado v. Trax Bar & Grill (2005) 36 Cal.4th 224, which established that California merchants have a special relationship-based duty of care to protect their customers from the wrongful acts of other customers. I also won an appeal in another premises liability case, Mata v. Mata (2003) 105 Cal.App.4th 1121, which involved an innocent bystander who was shot by an assailant in a bar due to negligent security. Because of my extensive experience in the field of premises liability, Thomson Reuters, the premier legal publisher in the U.S., asked me to author an article for its Causes of Action series. The article is entitled "Cause of Action Against Tavern Owners, Restaurants, And Similar Businesses For Injuries Caused To Patrons By The Criminal Acts Of Others," which can be found at 26 Causes of Action 2d 1 (2004, updated Oct. 2014). The article contains a nationwide, state-by-state summary of the law of third-party premises liability and has been cited by attorneys around the country as a one-of-a-kind resource. I frequently teaches university courses in legal research and legal technology to law students and students seeking a paralegal degree as well as present courses for CLE credit, particularly in the areas of legal technology and e-discovery, two topics about which I have considerable passion. I have lso taught appellate advocacy at Golden Gate University School of Law and civil procedure at John F. Kennedy School of Law. I write a quarterly column for the Sonoma County Bar Association's Bar Journal called "Legal Tech-nicalities." I often guest author articles OneSource, One Legal's blog, and I maintain (or have as works-in-progress) several blogs of my own on law and non-law topics.

Personal Interests & Charitable Work

My personal interests include creative and nonfiction writing, gardening, digital photography, and my three rescue dogs. Young Law Group funds an Annual Giving Tuesday Charitable Program which identifies three charities operating in the sphere of animal rights, animal welfare, or wildlife/habitat conservation to receive a portion of the firm's profits. Our annual pro bono hours are also devoted to cases involving the rights of animals or their human companions. The firm is currently in the process of establishing a scholarship fund to assist a law student who is actively pursuing a legal career in animal rights/welfare issues. We welcome the opportunity to discuss our charitable work in more detail.
