The seasonal schedules of firefighting and teaching allowed Russell to travel for long periods on surf excursions to the Southern Hemisphere. Russell attended California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, where he earned a B.A. in History and Minors in Philosophy, Anthropology, and Geography. After completing his M.A. in Latin American History and Social Theory at San Francisco State University, Russell attended Golden Gate University, where he earned his J.D. In the final year of law school, Russell volunteered at the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office, where he received his first trial experience. Then, Russell worked for the US Department of Justice on environmental cases that included the 2007 Cosco Busan tanker case, where 53,569 gallons of heavy fuel oil spilled into San Francisco Bay. During that time, Russell also worked for the Bar Association of San Francisco’s Indigent Defense Administration, where he defended indigent people in the criminal trial court.
