Personal Introduction
Veronica T. Barton is an award-winning trial attorney who focuses her practice on defending those accused of domestic violence. Veronica takes cases throughout the state of California, from Eureka to San Diego, and everything in between. After receiving her bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Veronica T. Barton earned her law degree cum laude from Loyola University Chicago. Veronica is admitted to practice law in all state courts in California. Veronica was previously a partner and lead trial attorney at Castaneda | Barton LLP. As the lead trial attorney, Veronica supervised associates and tried numerous jury trials to verdict, including murder and attempted murder cases. In 2019, Veronica founded the Law Offices of Veronica T. Barton with a more narrow scope that her previous firm: defending those accused of domestic violence. Veronica had just won a jury trial in a domestic violence case where her client was facing a felony based on his ex’s accusations. Her client couldn’t accept a felony because he would lose his job. However, the evidence against Veronica’s client was strong. The alleged victim had gone to the police and reported that he tried to strangle her and had photos showing significant bruises on her neck. (The client explained to Veronica that those bruises were caused when she attacked him and he held her off.) Before the trial, the judge, the client’s family, the client’s friends… basically everyone advised Veronica’s client to take a felony probation deal. The evidence didn’t look good, and he was facing prison if convicted. But by ruthlessly cross-examining the alleged victim and causing her to reveal her true angry and aggressive nature when she found herself caught in lies, Veronica secured a not guilty verdict. In freeing her client of false accusations, Veronica realized that she had found her calling in defending those accused of domestic violence. In today’s society, the chilling reality is that people can be convicted based solely on the accusation of someone else. False accusations are rampant. Even more alarming are restraining orders that are filed based on false allegations, where, without even being able to give their side of the story, someone can be kicked out of their house and unable to see their children, potentially for months at a time. In the era of “#metoo,” a false accusation has the potential to ruin someone’s life. Veronica has made it her mission to stop that from happening to her clients. Veronica regularly posts videos on YouTube about domestic violence and restraining orders. She also created a course called DEFEAT the DVRO in which she teaches how to win your restraining order court hearing while representing yourself. (You can get your free first class at DEFEATtheDVRO.com.) Veronica has been named as a Top 40 Under 40 Criminal Defense Attorney by the National Trial Lawyers. In 2021, she was presented with an Elite Lawyer Award for Excellence as a Trial Attorney. The National Academy of Criminal Defense Attorneys has also recognized Veronica with its Top 10 Attorney Under 40 Award. Additionally, Veronica has received the highest rating of 10.0 by Avvo.com for her work as a trial attorney.
